  • Cisco to acquire router developer

    Cisco Systems recently announced that it will acquire PipeLinks, a developer of Synchronous Optical Network (SONet)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) routers that can simultaneously transport circuit-based and IP traffic. PipeLinks' SONet/SDH router allows service providers to offer integrated voice and data services at the edge of the network. It will use Cisco's Internetwork Operating System software as a foundation and will enable the delivery of services such as managed Internet access and native LAN services.

  • Motorola, Nortel extend cable systems

    Motorola and Nortel Networks last week unveiled solutions for taking cable beyond television, enabling offerings such as voice over IP (VOIP). The moves were viewed by industry observers as gradually bringing multiservice cable into reality.

  • CheckPoint boosts security management

    In a potential boon to security service providers, CheckPoint Software Technologies will announce software that will better enable Internet service providers to centrally manage network security policies for corporate customers.

  • 3Com unveils two-way cable modem system

    3Com this week unveiled its bidirectional cable access system, which the vendor said will enable the delivery of broadband communications and will support future services such as voice over IP and videoconferencing. The Cable Access system -- which is based on the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification -- includes 3Com's Total Control Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS), network management software for the head end, and the US Robotics Cable Modem CMX.

  • IBM to offer disaster recovery

    IBM Global Services will this week introduce its recovery support services for businesses, which help protect mission-critical Internet-based applications from infrastructure outages. The Business Recovery Services unit of IBM Global Services will unveil five offerings designed to help businesses understand the appropriate level of protection as well as develop the procedures to perform a recovery process.
