$5m VoIP job for ANU fuels NSC growth

With the first phase of a $5 million Avaya IP telephony implementation under its belt, network integrator NSC Group has expanded its staff as it seeks to ramp up its VoIP business.
The installation at Australian National University (ANU) was done jointly between Avaya and gold partner NSC. With the potential to scale up to 15,000 IP users, Avaya claims the ANU now has Australia’s largest fully converged IP network.
NSC managing director, Craig Neil, said the ANU rollout had included its largest cutover in one weekend, involving the installation of 1224 IP handsets, 5543 analogue extensions and 240 trunks.
NSC is gunning for recognition as a top three integrator with VoIP experience, and has taken on 12 new staff in the past month to help with this aim.
Neil hoped the ANU contract would open further government doors. Several of the company’s 12 new employees were focusing on the Canberra market.
NSC was starting to see a payoff from moving towards voice and data convergence three years ago, he said.
“Like Avaya, we’ve had the challenge of education our voice engineers,” Neil said.
The market had warmed to IP networking, according to Neil, who said the ANU installation was NSC’s biggest IP project to date.
“We’re working on another one across 57 sites, which will finish in September,” he said.
