IP telephony a Logical solution for AAD

Systems integrator Logical has completed the first stage of a contract to introduce IP telephony within the Federal Government’s Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).
Stage one of the project has seen Logical replace a PABX system at the Hobart headquarters of AAD with Cisco equipment and link it to remote polar outposts at Casey, Davis, Mawson and Macquarie Island.
The AAD is conducting tests of the equipment during winter months and will have existing PABX equipment at the remote stations replaced with IP telephony later in the year when conditions allow it to be shipped out.
“An IP telephony solution provides easy remote management, maintenance and support features to allow effective communication between staff working in isolated areas,” Logical Australia managing director, Stuart Hendry, said. “This is vital for the smooth operation of the AAD’s scientific research programs and the ongoing advancement of Australia’s Antarctic interests.”
If everything goes to plan, the AAD envisages having a fully converged telecommunications system with call manager, IP telephones and an upgraded network to support more than 600 staff within the next two years.
The system will feature routers containing Cisco’s survival remote site telephony (SRST), a major safety benefit designed to maintain internal communications in case of satellite link failure.
AAD specifications for the new telephone system also included additional features such as calling line identification, advice of charge and voicemail.
