Acer opens up e-commerce to the channel

PC vendor, Acer, has extended the functionality of its e-commerce system to allow its indirect reseller partners, via distributors, to build PCs to order on behalf of end users.
Dubbed AcerLink, the initiative is essentially an extension of Acer’s popular APeC e-commerce system, a system which allowed Acer’s 450-plus direct channel partners (those resellers that buy direct from Acer rather than through distributors) to configure Acer PCs and servers online.
AcerLink takes the e-commerce system one step further than its predecessor. It offers a fully functional trading hub which disseminated real-time information to dealers from both Acer and its distributors.
Acer channel manager, Greg Mikaelian, predicts that AcerLink will make Acer the number one vendor in the SMB/SOHO space within two years.
He said Acer currently sat at number three in Australia for this market, as most resellers opted for whitebox computer sales to avoid competition with direct-selling brand name vendors.
“There are thousands of resellers out there that are sick and tired of being beaten up by IBM and Dell,” he said. “With AcerLink, they can bring customers into their shopfront or office or whatever street presence they have, and guide them through the build-to-order process.”
Customers that order through their reseller could have those PCs in five working days, he said. Dell could only offer delivery within 10 working days.
Mikaelian said that AcerLink would triple Acer’s sales in the SMB/SOHO market within two years, considering that the same technology had already tripled Acer’s mass merchant sales over a similar period.
