Amazon gets set to open Sydney warehouse

Amazon Australia is set to establish its second warehouse in the local market with plans to open its new fulfilment centre in Sydney’s southwest by the second half of this year.
Amazon’s first Australian fulfilment centre – as the company refers to its distribution warehouses – in Melbourne’s Dandenong South was up and running as of October last year, with the official opening taking place in December, in time for the launch of the company’s Australian online marketplace.
However, a second Sydney site has been in the works for some time. Indeed, Fairfax Media reported in November last year that the online marketplace operator had paid $7 million for a vacant lot in Sydney.
The new 43,000 square metre facility is located in the Goodman Centenary Distribution Centre in Sydney’s Moorebank.
According to Amazon Australia operations director Robert Bruce, the move to open the Sydney warehouse comes after a “steady and progressive” increase in customer demand.
“This new facility builds on the capabilities of our first centre in Dandenong South, allowing us to continue to fulfil our commitment to fast and reliable deliveries for Australian customers,” Bruce said.
“This investment will benefit both customers and the local economy by generating new jobs and providing small and medium sized Australian businesses [that] sell on amazon.com.au and use our Fulfilment by Amazon program, with an opportunity to more easily access millions of customers across the country,” he said.
For Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller, the new site is expected to become a key logistics hub thanks to its strategic position in southwest Sydney.
“We are pleased to welcome the Amazon fulfilment centre to Moorebank,” Waller said. “This is a great win for our local community; the Amazon facility will be a boon for South West Sydney and we look forward to having good jobs for people close to where they live and having a partner involved in the local community.”
Since its local launch late last year, Amazon has introduced a number of new products and services, including Alexa, Amazon Echo, Amazon Music Unlimited, and Fulfilment by Amazon.
It is this last service, which sees Australian sellers tap into Amazon’s logistics operations to pick, pack and ship their goods directly from the company’s fulfilment centre, where the new warehouse, along with the company’s existing Melbourne centre, comes into the picture.
Amazon said that it will begin recruiting immediately for a range of roles including operations, support and technical specialists for the new centre.
Last week, the company posted a job ad on LinkedIn recruiting for a new Sydney-based fulfilment centre leader who will be responsible for all budgetary, people development and operations’ objectives for the entire fulfilment centre.
Additional responsibilities include managing and leading a team of senior operations managers and functional leads, coaching and mentoring the team to ensure performance objectives are met, building positive employee relations and building leadership bench strength.
