Global data analytics company, SAS Institute Australia, Has beaten out all of its rivals to win a Victoria Police procurement contact for the implementation of a data insights platform.
SAS has a channel strategy with partners that include Accenture, Capgemini, Deloitte, and Teradata. However, the company went direct for the Victoria Police tender.
Victorian Police Minister, Lisa Neville, said the company would develop an overarching software system to connect current police databases such as LEAP and Interpose.
“Today is the next step in modernising Victoria Police in terms of its technology and capacity,” she said. “Today we are celebrating the start of development of the new intelligence system.”
The project is being funded through the $227 million set aside for IT upgrades in the latest state budget.
Victoria Police said the system will be the envy of all other Australian law enforcement agencies and help police close in on terrorists, perpetrators of family violence, organised criminals, networked youth gangs and other serious offenders.
The minister said there will be approximately 600 Victoria Police officers who will have access to the technology directly as of June 2016, within a year the minister said this access will be extended to over 5000 officers.
Next year, the system is set to expand to include more databases, and more police officers will be trained so they can also use the powerful search engine to catch local offenders.
The system will monitor suspect’s relationships via social media and other sources, linking this information to police databases and allow investigators to query the data to assist in investigations.
Victoria Police said the system will also be able to better identify previously unknown criminal links, trends, and patterns in criminal activity and better predict local crime trends and hotspots.
The contract win comes as SAS is awarded a $4.43 million deal from the Federal Government's Department of Human Services for the provision of software maintenance.
