Canon tests new global IT services locally

Canon Australia has become a $40 million testbed for a new integrated solutions division within the international Canon company.

If successful, the camera and office products company plans to introduce global integrated solutions based around data storage and retrieval, fast data entry, distribution and retrieval, legal compliance and control, Webcasting, distance learning, remote personnel communication, and LAN and Internet surveillance.

Ian Smith, assistant general manager of integrated solutions for Canon, said the company's view of Australia is leading the adoption of new technologies -- in particular Internet and intranet technologies and multimedia-capable networks -- and has given Canon Australia the task of testing the market's response to the approach. "The market is fairly sophisticated in the adoption of these technologies," he said.

Smith would not be drawn on the rollout times for Canon globally but said Australia is now a fully operational business unit with 50 staff and an office in all capital cities, while most other countries were still in development.
