Incident response will be critical for the channel in 2016: Check Point

Developing appropriate incident response plans will be a big opportunity for the channel in 2016 according to IT security firm, Check Point.
The vendor has released its security predictions for 2016 and Check Point regional systems engineer director A/NZ, Philip Dimitriu, told ARN that the number of new cyber threats on the landscape and introduction of new technologies means channel partners will have to stay vigilant.
He explained that the recent release of Windows 10 and iOS 9 mean cyber criminals will take advantage of attacking these new operating systems because updates are more frequent and users are less familiar with the environments.
“2016 will bring new security challenges, many we have not seen before and it will continue to highlight the need for proactive intelligence to complement other security solutions,” Dimitriu said.
“Having adaptive security measures and incident response plans in place to be able to react to a changing environment will be critical in the coming year and there is a lot of opportunity for channel partners in helping clients develop tested, effective incident response plans.”
He went on to say that there was a consultative play here for the channel as thease plans need to be updated regularly and organisations were becoming more focussed on constantly checking security postures.
IoT is still an issue
Dimitriu also noted that the Internet of Things would continue to provide challenges and opportunities for the channel in 2016.
“The more devices that are connected to the Internet, the Internet of Things becomes a larger problem and introduces issues that would not have to be taken into account previously,” he said.
“We should treat devices in the home the same way devices are treated on a corporate network.”
Organisations will look to security consolidation.
Check Point said to protect against advanced threats, security professionals will increase their reliance on centralised security management solutions and that consolidating security provides an effective way to cut complexity and make for easier management.
Dimitriu added that this would involve consolidation of IT security solutions into a single centralised management platform as well as a collaborative system where intelligence, management, preventative capability and incident response are consolidated into one.
“It makes sense from a security standpoint and from a cost standpoint,” he said.
The vendor also predicted securing critical public infrastructure, the rise of advanced threat protection, new malware and vulnerabilities in wearable devices would be prevalent issues for the year ahead.
