It is with great sadness, we report the passing of Carolyn Macken, business development manager at Avnet.
Carolyn had a long career in the ICT industry beginning as Channel Manager at Telstra in 1998, according to her LinkedIn profile.
In October 2000 she moved to LAN Systems (then part of the Westcon Group) as Cisco Alliance Manager, spending five years and two months with the company before taking up a position at Ingram Micro as Corporate Account Manager in December 2005.
In June 2009, Carolyn joined Samsung Electronics as Channel Manager - IT NSW/ACT before moving to a role as Strategic Partner Manager at Storagecraft Asia-Pacific in November 2011.
After nine months she joined CommVault as its Channel Manager Northern Region before ending up at Avnet in November 2013.
NEXTGEN managing director, John Walters, paid a fond tribute to his former work colleague.
"The passing of Carolyn is a sad day for our channel, as she has been a part of it for many years. I had the pleasure of working very closely with Carolyn on two occasions over a 17-year period and on many other occasions by association. The first was at LAN Systems, when we decided to set up a 'Telco' business unit to support Cisco into this fast growing space.
"Carolyn was hired along with Kerry Soussou and Tony Heywood and as a team did some wonderful business into Telstra, Optus, MCI WorldCom and even OneTel (and we got our money!!). They were 'heady' times and Carolyn brought so much positive energy and deep industry knowledge to a fledgling business unit. The success of the Telco business unit, in a short space of time, added considerable value to the sale of LAN Systems to the Westcon Group in 2000. The second was when I personally hired Carolyn to join Ingram Micro in 2005, not long after its acquisition of Tech Pacific. Again, Carolyn brought a depth of knowledge; fantastic relationship management skills; and a fun and positive approach to our Team," he said.
"Twelve months ago, after experiencing severe back pain, Carolyn was diagnosed with a very rare cancer - Hystocystic Sarcoma. After many treatments and multiple hospital admissions she continued to battle her illness in an effort to beat this insidious disease.
"For the past year, Carolyn bravely faced every treatment available to her including chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell replacement therapy and encompassing multiple hospitalisations but the cancer continued to advance. Throughout, her partner Craig, family and team of friends including Kerry White and Jane Briot, provided care and support including rosters for transport to and from doctors, tests, hospital and home. Several weeks ago, Carolyn was offered a new trial treatment in a final effort to defeat this illness and win the battle for her life but sadly this was not successful and last Sunday, July 12, 2015, she passed away.
"Carolyn was a brave, lovely and unique person with a quirky sense of humour and all that knew her will miss her very much. There is expected to be a large industry attendance at her funeral, which will be held this Friday at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, 199 Delhi Road, North Ryde, at 10.15am."
ARN extends its sincere condolences to Carolyn's family and friends.
