Virgin Mobile will reward defecting customers with bonus data

Customers who leave their existing telco to join Virgin Mobile will be rewarded with bonus data.
The telco is offering up to 4GB of extra data to customers who defect to its network, or to its existing customers who upgrade on select plans.
Virgin is the only carrier in Australia that rolls over its customers’ unused data. This means any unused ‘bonus data’ can be rolled over to the next billing cycle.
The offer coincides with the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which go on sale in Australia today.
How much data is added depends on the rate plan and whether or not customers order online. Buying a smartphone on Virgin’s $40 phone plan in store results in 500MB of extra data per month, while ordering it online doubles the allowance to 1GB. This is in addition to the plan’s existing 500 megabytes of included data.
The most bonus data up for grabs requires customers to sign up to Virgin’s $100 plan online for 4GB extra per month. The plan already comes with 6GB of data and pushes the total to 10GB per month.
Virgin is the most recent telco to incentivise customers in the lead up to the launch of Samsung’s smartphone flagship.
Rival Telstra has increased its data limits, is restructuring its excess data costs and is bundling the video on demand service Presto.
Optus has retaliated with increased data allowances, a bundled subscription to Netflix and introduced ‘Family Sharing’ plans, while Vodafone has increased its data allowances and has partnered with streaming service Netflix.
