3Com plays down staff reduction

Networking specialist 3Com has played down the impact in Australia and New Zealand of global workforce cuts following its merger with US Robotics.
Managing director John Halliwell said the elimi-nation of 600 permanent and 200 contract positions impacted primarily on back-office areas, such as manufacturing and financials.
Halliwell said that he'd been lax in hiring staff over the last quarter due to the three- month regulatory window that slowed consummation of the merger between 3Com and US Robotics.
He said he'd only just signed off a headcount projection that incorporated the employment of an additional three people this quarter and up to 25 more over the remainder of the year.
