New iiNet initiative spreads awareness about cyber security

Online Safety Series gives helpful advice to both parents and children

Australia’s second largest DSL service provider, iiNet (ASX: IIN), has launched an online safety series to help Australians become more aware of safe practices when surfing the Web.

Information covering topics such as social networking, online shopping, phishing emails and password security will be released every month and made available for download from the iiNet website.

“We’re passionate about the Internet as an educational and social development tool, but we’re realistic about the security risks too,” iiNet compliance manager, Rebecca Moonen, said.

“Cyber safety can be as simple as a good anti-virus program and sensible privacy settings, and we’re keen to make this knowledge accessible to the wider community.”

The first instalment of iiNet’s Online Safety Series will offer parents a handy introduction to the Facebook social network and potential pitfalls for teen users.

The launch of the service coincides with the Australian Government’s National Cyber Security Awareness Week run from May 30 to June 3.
