Sony Australia has announced an entry-level drive that will store up to up to 90GB on one cartridge.
The SDX420 AIT-1 connects via the IDE interface built into most PCs, servers and entry-level NAS units and features a sustained transfer rate of 4Mbps native. The drive incorporates ALDC hardware-compression technology to increase the effective capacity and transfer rate. The drive is designed for use with smaller servers and even single PCs. Future generations of AIT technology will hold up to 800GB native on a single cartridge, according to Sony. The new drive will ship this month. It is designed to mount internally in a 5.25-inch slot and will be offered bare and as a kit complete with media, cables and Retrospect backup software. The kit will retail for $1,795. 35GB and 25GB AIT cassettes hold a retail price of $165 and $150, respectively.www.aittape.com.
