Taking the cost out of large scans

Conventional large-format scanners are extremely expensive so it is not hard to imagine that a low-cost solution to an increasingly common need would attract attention from resellers in the imaging solutions niche.
The latest DesKan solution from Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) - DeSKan Express 5 - is a specialised product that caters to small organisations that have a requirement for large-format scanning. It is generally used for conversion of images to CAD (computer aided design) platforms. The main buyers of these products are currently architects, universities, libraries, museums and government authorities.
According to SKM's Jorge Pereira, the DeSKan solution is five to 10 times cheaper than the $20,000-$50,000 solutions currently on the market. He said it is slower than more expensive offerings but he claims it delivers equally as good results.
The product is capable of scanning all standard paper sizes and it can also be used to scan oversized documents.
Using a motorised A4 scanning head combined with a precision calibrated guide system and the DeSKan software, an operator can scan an A0 page in seven vertical strips, which are then precisely matched for a seamless image.
