Channel posts strong printer sales for January

Who said inkjets had seen better days? According to latest figures from market analyst Inform, inkjet printer sales in January increased 11 per cent over the previous year. Data for the beginning of the year shows sales that were close to the highest-ever figures recorded by the analyst and showed a marked improvement over the 2001 and 2000.

The overall printer market for January increased 2 per cent on last year, but fell 13 per cent over December 2000. Nevertheless, Inform analysts believe the figures could be an indicator of a more positive market.

"The economic uncertainties of recent times have forced many businesses to re-evaluate their place in the channel," said printer market analyst Stuart James. "But the apparent freeze in corporate spending on print solutions over the last two quarters should now thaw and provide much needed value flow through for resellers."

Increased business and consumer confidence should result in further year-on-year sales increases and positive value growth, according to Inform.

Unit sales in the corporate dealer channel increased 36 per cent on January 2001. However direct marketers were the real winners in January, picking up a whopping 62 per cent over January 2001 to take a total market share of 12 per cent.
