Ingram boosts phone smarts with Sony Ericsson

Looking to expand its mobile market play, Ingram Micro has struck a distribution agreement to carry Sony Ericsson smartphones.
Ingram product and marketing director, Matthew Sanderson, said mobility was a key strategic initiative and it had wanted to fill a gap in its portfolio. The distributor has an existing relationship with Sony Ericsson in the US and Europe.
"We've got some strong brands in there, such as O2, Palm and Vodafone [with their data cards], but we wanted a handset provider," he said. "Sony Ericsson has a good presence here and it was a strategic move for us to put them in our portfolio."
Sanderson said the range would be targeted at the corporate and SMB markets. Ingram joins Cellnet and Brightpoint in the vendor's local distributor lineup. He also hinted at plans to increase its mobility portfolio later in the year.
"We've got a strong foundation to grow from now and it's a solid business already. This will just complement it," Sanderson said. "Mobility is the type of space that most resellers want to get into and it is a growth area for them and us."
Sony Ericsson head of sales Oceania, Gino Casha, said Sony did not have much IT channel exposure. It had been looking to partner with a distributor with business development skills and partner knowledge.
"It will enable us to get our product out to all those channels we haven't had much history with," he said.
