Intel to make vPro technology mobile

Value added services opportunity surrounds new processors

The channel will have another reason to spruik Intel-based hardware to customers with news that the chipmaker is extending the technology found in its desktop-based vPro processors to laptops.

To be sold under the Intel Centrino Pro banner, the processors will take vPro business functionality, currently only seen in the desktop realm, onto the mobile platform.

This will allow IT departments to manage desktops and notebooks simultaneously, whether wired or wireless, and to perform a host of administrative tasks on laptops including diagnostics and repairs.

Intel reseller channel organisation manager, Thomas Tapsas, said the release of Centrino Pro - which had been codenamed Santa Rosa - would enable the local channel to start offering value-added services such as built-in manageability and proactive security on a mobile product.

"These value-added services will provide the channel with further opportunities to target small to large enterprise in Australia," he said. "The channel has the opportunity to sell both a desktop and notebook integrated in the same fleet, for customer ease of management."

The new Centrino Pro processors will be available in the second quarter this year, as part of the company's overall refresh of its Centrino technology.
