HP sends resellers to blade school

HP is encouraging resellers to go back school in order to get them up to speed on its latest blade servers. The company this week announced its HP BladeSystem c-Class box, which replaces the p-Class.
The 17-inch box supports server, storage and client blades. The new chassis also includes enhanced networking capabilities, including a new Virtual Connect Architecture, which lets administrators wire systems once and shift resources with virtualised Ethernet and Fibre Channel connections.
HP is expecting big things from this product. Manager of enterprise products and services marketing, Angus Jones, claimed competitors did not have anything like it in the market.
The company will stress the significance of its blade technologies to channel partners at day-long training sessions to be known as Blade School.
"HP does not normally spend a lot of time talking about competitor products but this time we are really hitting on key product features," Jones said. "We are giving resellers a product far above the competition. It is giving them an advantage."
In order to generate blade sales, Jones said HP had deliberately introduced much bigger margins than were available on its ProLiant servers.
HP is also offering a service called Blade on Demand, which has had three trial customers for the past year on its p-Class system. It allows users to buy a rack with full capacity but only switch servers on as required.
The box is in manufacturing now and will be available in a fortnight.
