Fujitsu offers all-in-one answer to branch office data

Fujitsu Siemens Computer has launched a new branch office service called Dynamic IT to reduce the IT burden on smaller offices and improve protection of data.

The three-part service relies on a data center. Data is either transferred periodically to the data center from the branch office or held in the data center. The three products are:

- RepliStor to replicate consolidated data in the branch office to the data center. It is an EMC/Legato product.

- A new FSC appliance running Microsoft's DPM is used as a disk-to-disk near-continuous backup appliance. It sits in the datacenter and "sucks" data from the branch offices.

- A new FSC Wide Area File System (WAFS) product used to send data to branch offices. Caching, compression and acceleration techniques present centrally-held data at LAN or near-LAN speed

The WAFS product will use software from a partner and be developed to handle SQL Server and Exchange files, and also local server functions such as DHCP.

NetApp and Cisco are active in the WAFS area. Expand is also, pushing the "replace the local file server" idea, and Brocade is looking for OEM partners after its tie-up with Tacit Networks.
