Syquest shuts local offices

After a less than pleasing year for Syquest in Australia, the Californian-based company has decided to close its local subsidiary and transfer the operations to its master distributor, Westan. Greg Peel, vice-president of Syquest Asia-Pacific sales, said the move accompanies a new management and marketing strategy for Syquest, as it attempts to regain its share in the removable cartridge hard drive market.
According to Peel, Syquest's Australian subsidiary, which was closed late last year, was not proving cost effective. "We didn't have the sales capacity to justify some of the things we were trying to do in Australia. It takes a lot of money to support a subsidiary. We had a better way to go with Westan - I'd rather put my dollars in technical support and advertising than a subsidiary that has no guaranteed returns," he said.
Westan, a peripheral distributor based in Melbourne, will provide Syquest's local sales, marketing, and support needs. Subdistributors are Guardian Data and Advanced Peripherals.
