LAN Systems extends support, calls in the medics

Value-added distributor LAN Systems is extending its service range with the addition of two new product families and through offering an ordering and configuration facility for Cisco's SMARTnet pre-packaged services on its Web site.
SMARTnet services offer simple and modular network maintenance support at three service levels, to make it easier for end users and resellers to access Cisco technical support.
By allowing users to order the packages from its Web site, LAN Systems' managing director Scott Frew also hopes to make accessing them easier.
SMARTnet is the first product LAN Systems is allowing to be ordered through its Web site, although Frew said more will be available once the distributor Web-enables its back- end systems.
LAN Systems has also extended its Internet product portfolio by taking on the distributorship of Net.Medic from VitalSigns Software. Net.Medic is an Internet browser companion that monitors, isolates, diagnoses and corrects problems affecting Internet and intranet performance.
The product uses an animation of the user's end-to-end connection to display any bottlenecks of congestion that may be occurring across the Internet. Reported variables include throughput, retrieval time, and Web server load and efficiency.
Net.Medic also monitors the PC and modem, ensuring optimal configuration for real-time Internet pathway conditions, along with historical trend information. It is expected to retail for around $100.
A second version of the product, called Net.Medic Pro, is designed for high-end users such as ISPs and network professionals, and is expected to sell for around $1000.
New distribution role
Further in the vein of monitoring network performance, LAN Systems has taken on distribution of the 3DV family of products from Network General.
The 3DV range uses a sophisticated, rules-based expert system for analysing Cisco routers, Bay Networks and Cabletron hubs, as well as RMon-based LAN switches. The product set includes NetworkPM, an entry-level network monitoring solution that provides a cost-effective, turnkey software tool for analysing long-term utilisation trends.
