Speed rewriting from HP
Hewlett-Packard has released its second CD-R offering, available in internal and external models.
TH HP SureStore CD-Writer Plus 7200 comes bundled with seven software applications from Adaptec, Adobe, Corel, DocuMagix, HP and Norton.
HP says the applications provide users with a complete solution for the creation of audio and photographic CDs, storing and transporting large files, and creating a paperless office.
The SureStore is a three-in-one drive, functioning as CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW drives. It provides up to 650MB of removable storage capacity -- the equivalent of more than 400 standard high-density floppy disks.
It reads at 6x transfer speed and writes at 2x transfer speed on both CD-RW and CD-R media. The internal version has an IDE interface and installs without an adapter card. The external version plugs into a PC's standard parallel port, which has a pass-through connector that allows the drive and printer to be attached to the PC.
The HP SureStore CD-Writer Plus 7200i (internal) has an estimated street price of $849 and 7200e (external) is $1049.

Go silently with Pioneer
Sound specialist Pioneer Electronics has released what it calls the fastest and quietest CD-ROM drive on the block.
With 32x spin speed, the DR-A04S offers a data transfer rate of 4950KBps.
The average random seek time is only 60ms, and the average random access time is 70ms, making the drive ideal for retrieval of high-speed text and graphics.
The drive uses Pioneer's "slot-in" loading system, similar to that of the company's car stereos.
The drive grips both disc edges without touching data surfaces and when it ejects discs, the central hole is visible to allow removal without leaving data-damaging finger marks on the disc's surface.
Pioneer's newly developed servo mechanism incorporates a moving vibration absorber, which allows discs to run at a higher rotation speed without the vibration or buzzing sounds generated with other drives.
Four versions of the drive are available. The DR-AO4S carries a recommended retail price of $299.

New process mapper tools
Micrografx has released Optima! 2.5, the latest version of its process mapping and ana-lysis utility. It includes the Rummler-Brache Group method of using horizontal bands called swim-lanes.
Optima! 2.5 produces reports in either tabular or graphic formats from statistics generated in the simulation stage. Businesses can gather information or conduct analysis at any point in the process. It can also compare alternative "what if?" scenarios in a single report.
The product is compatible with Micrografx's FlowCharter diagramming software. Optima! 2.5 allows process maps to be saved in HTML format for Internet or intranet Web pages.
The recommended retail price for Optima! 2.5 is $1100.

Panasonic's box for all jobs
Panasonic has released a new compact multi-function plain paper facsimile machine (KX-F111OAL) that is a fax, PC printer, PC scanner, PC fax, copier, phone and digital answering machine -- all rolled into one.
The KX-F111OAL has a 14.4Kbps modem which Panasonic says is faster than previous models, saving money on long-distance transmissions.
Did we tell you about . . .
It also has a 28-page out-of-paper memory that allows users to send multi-page documents to up to 117 locations sequentially.
The new machine is practical for busy offices because it has a digital (full-duplex) hands-free speakerphone, as well as a phone handset and an integrated digital telephone answering machine. Thanks to the digital technology, the sound is of higher quality and echo and drop-out are reduced, according to Panasonic.
Additional features are a voice prompt feature, which directs callers and assists users in operating the machine; a 15-page automatic document feeder; a 150-sheet feeder; and an error correction mode which checks documents line by line during transmission.
The Panasonic KX-F111OAL is available for a recommended retail price of $999.

Creative Pacific blasts 3D gaming accelerator marketCreative Pacific, Australian distributor for Creative Technology (a provider of multimedia products for PCs), has announced it will begin shipment of two 3D BlasterTM Voodoo2 gaming cards in March.
The two models in Creative's line-up of 3D Blaster Voodoo2 graphics accelerators are a fully equipped 12MB version and a powerful 8MB version.
Sim Wong Hoo, chairman and CEO of Creative Technology, said: "PC gamers around the world have been clamouring for the 3D Blaster Voodoo2 since we first previewed it at COMDEX Fall, 1997."
Both models have high-speed, single cycle DRAM and deliver three million triangles per second, in conjunction to 90 million (180 million pixels) deal-textured, bilinear-filtered, per-pixel MIP mapped, alpha-blended, Z-buffered pixels per second. This high-performance makes 3D Blaster Voodoo2 the most powerful 3D gaming solution in Creative's line of high-performance graphics cards, according to Creative Pacific.
With its speed which, Creative says, is three times that found in current graphics cards using the Voodoo GraphicsTM Chipset, 3D Blaster Voodoo2 has been designed for PC gamers who are looking for high-quality performance. The 12MB version comes at a recommended retail price of $699, while the 8MB version can be had for $499 RRP.
