Tandberg revs tape storage for high capacity

Tandberg Data has introduced its latest addition to the storage market the Tandberg MLR3 tape data storage management solution.
The Tandberg MLR3 reinforces the vendor's MLR (Multi-channel Linear Recording) technology roadmap to achieve high performance with 50GB compressed capacity (25GB native) and transfer rates of up to 240MB per minute.
The MLR3's design revolves around proven data cartridge development with MLR, thin-film MR heads, a servo system for precision head tracking and newly-developed tape media supporting the higher capacity and performance.
Tandberg officials claim the progression from the MLR1, which only operated on 32GB capacity and transfer rates of 180MB per minute, to the MLR3 has come in only 14 months.
The MLR3 is available as a complete tape data storage management solution or as a tape drive kit without software, in either internal or external models.
A Fast Wide SCSI interface allows a typical 28GB backup in less than two hours, and also features backward compatibility to the Tandberg SLR-MLR full range product family and other data cartridge products.
Kim Neilsen, Tandberg's country manager for Australia and New Zealand, believes the MLR technology is well placed to succeed in the high-end tape back up storage market.
"Coming from a small entity, Tandberg Data will become a big player in the high-end Linear Recording tape storage back up market in no time," he said. "The MLR technology is well positioned against competing technologies. We expect to grow significantly."
