ProCurve aims at Cisco with enterprise push

HP will tackle Cisco head-on in the enterprise space through a new range of security appliances released under its ProCurve brand.
The range includes the ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl series, an update to the 5300 series of switches and an Access Controller Module for the 5300 switch. All three are additions to the vendor's wireless local area network (WLAN) portfolio.
Director of worldwide product marketing, Amol Mitra, said the ongoing consolidation at the WAN end of organisational networks was the driver behind the new offering.
"We have been a LAN-edge focused vendor and now want to move into the WAN-edge," he said. "We see consolidation of appliances on that edge - firewalls and VPNs with WAN functionality - and want to optimise them for remote branch offices."
ProCurve South Pacific marketing and sales manager, Mark Berends, said the new range would benefit the channel by offering them an alternative to Cisco products.
"When somebody has 70 per cent plus share, the market is ripe for someone to come along and give people a second choice," he said.
To encourage partners to take up the new offering, ProCurve wass currently running a demonstration program which offers promotional discounts on the new range during the next few months, Berends said. The company would also train partners in the needs of the enterprise space.
"These products still hit the sweet spot in the SMB space, but they also expand our overall market," he said. "While we will train up our current channel to sell them, we will also use the range to broaden our base to make it easier for us to enter the enterprise space."
