Computer Discount Warehouse
Although Applied Microsystems general manager Shane Taylor mainly uses the Internet to find specific information, he says a good site needs to be friendly for the non-Internet literate. He says the Computer Discount Warehouse site is the most useful and best-designed industry site.
Taylor says the site is built around trading over the Internet. He likes how it explains, in layman's terms, exactly how to use the site.
Taylor said the concept would be successful in Australia, if there was infrastructure to support such a scheme. He said Computer Discount Warehouse guaranteed next-day delivery. If Australian resellers had a solid delivery infrastructure, Taylor said it would be viable for a similar system to be established here. Taylor says the differentiator for many Web sites is how the businesses implement the systems.
Andover News Network
The Andover News Network has a busy home page but it's worth persevering to get to the guts of it. It's an American-based IT news service that is updated every two hours on weekdays.
There are a variety of focus sections to select from on the home page, including advertising, Java, Microsoft, networking, Telcos and software.
The network combines newswire content with graphics, original content and columns to provide exclusive coverage of IT industry news and events.
Every story is archived for one week from the date it appears.
After a redesign in March, Andover News uses the design concepts of white space and simplicity, almost to perfection.
Also on the home page are Andover Network links, including the "Amazing, Instant, On-line Animated Banner Maker", cartoon of the day, Freecode, and an Internet traffic report.
There's also a link to the oddly-named Dave Central, which is actually a software archive.
The pages don't use a lot of graphics, so they're fairly quick to download.
If you're looking for industry news with a bit of cheek, Andover News is certainly worth bookmarking.
