Creative introduce affordability into CD-RW

While Creative Pacific has jumped on rewritable CD burning technology with its new CD-RW Blaster 2224 CD burner, one storage media distributor has indicated blank disk sales are continuing to go through the roof.
Creative Pacific's marketing manager, Kamil Gurgen, told ARN last week its new product introduces real affordability to what is increasingly becoming a consumer technology. He advises retailers not already taking the product category seriously to do so.
"Offering rewritable functionality for under $700 is a big step forward for this market," Gurgen said. "It is rapidly becoming a consumer tech- nology and we are trying to push it fairly heavily.
"This technology is no longer just for technophobes, and the Creative Blaster name is one that is well recognised by consumers," he added.
"All our indicators are showing this to be one of the fastest-growing markets for PC peripherals. By combining 24X reading speed, burning and CD rewriting in one product, there is no longer any need for users to have two CD drives."
Proof of the number of people now incorporating CD writing technology is in the exponential growth of the associated storage media sales.
Monica Tu, national sales manager for storage media and peripherals distributor NASA Technology, said both gold disks (CD-R) and silver disks (CD-RW) sales are more than doubling every six months. She has seen sales of writable disks, now selling at retail for less than $3.00 each, grow from 150,000 in May 1998 to 350,000 in November. Retailer Harvey Norman has in the past reported the disk to be its biggest selling individual product.
"The market has really grown," Tu said. "It took off when the writable burners became much cheaper. The same will happen to rewritable CDs as their hardware prices come down."
Tu added that the sales of rewritable disks are still very small because the cost of both the drives and the media (over $10 in retail) have been high.
Blaster 2224 has an RRP of $649 and is packaged for retail.
