Survey: Sept proves robust for online retailers

If September's number are any indication, it's going to be a strong holiday shopping season on the Web, according to figures released by PC Data last week.
A record number of buyers flocked to major sites last month, the Virginia-based research firm reported, with survey leader Amazon.com handling more than 1 million home-based shoppers. Seventeen of the top 20 retail sites posted "significant increases" in traffic.
"This suggests that consumers, growing more comfortable with buying on the Internet, flooded back into the Web retail market after what was viewed as a relatively slow [northern] summer," PC Data concluded.
The company based its conclusions on tracking activities of a sample of 67,000 home Internet users. Based on that sample, PC Data concluded that Amazon.com led all Web retail sites with 1.097 billion consumers buying goods on its site last month, followed by Drugstore.com at 362,000, Barnesandnoble.com with 347,000, Buy.com at 316,000 and Ticketmaster.com with 282,000.
