Out of the box - printers

Panasonic's new network-ready colour Postscript 3 laser printer is just hitting the market, with the vendor saying it delivers quality ready-to-proof copies. Panasonic promises colour images close to photographic quality with the KX-P8420. The printer features a 1200dpi laser engine and a Pantone calibrated Fiery print controller. It comes with a 2.2GB hard disk and 80MB of memory as standard but the RAM can be upgraded to either 16MB, 32MB, 64MB or 144MB.

But for a time-poor artist in a busy ad agency or graphic artist studio it's how fast it prints that matters. According to Panasonic, the KX-P8420 prints 600dpi in three colours at 4.7 pages per minute, in four colours at 3.5ppm and in monochrome at 14ppm. The paper tray holds 250 A4 sheets which provides the continuous print runs needed for a networked printer.

The printer utilises Adobe PostScript 3 and supports both Mac and PC environments on the Windows 3.1/95 and 98, Windows NT 3.5.1/4.0 and Unix platforms.

The KX-P8420 sells for $6999 RRP.
