Compaq has announced the addition of new storage solutions for the enterprise, based on its Enterprise Storage Network Architecture strategy.
Compaq's marketing manager for storage, Stephen Bovis, said all its storage products would be sold through the channel. He said Compaq was working with channel partners to help them put in place a storage focus. `It's like a teaming approach.'
New storage area network (SAN) solutions recently released include: software for instant backup and restore; an enhanced disaster recovery solution for worldwide data protection; a proactive `phone home' service to automatically fix problems; storage solutions configured with industry-leading applications; a portfolio of enterprise backup solutions for open systems; and `universal' storage devices.
Systems integrator Data#3's enterprise storage specialist, James Gill, said it tried to offer its customers a fresh approach to old problems exacerbated by data growth, and the new products from Compaq were more pieces in the puzzle.
`People can't do this overnight and we're trying to work with Compaq because they've got a vision and strategy in place.'
Integration company Com Tech Communications' product manager, enterprise systems, Greg Bowden, said he believed the announcements by Compaq were very significant because they brought the promise of storage area networks to reality.
As a result of SANs becoming an emerging market, Com Tech has put in place a Data & Storage Management practice, which includes: data management services; disaster recovery planning; backup and recovery planning; storage framework planning and storage integration services.
`Implementing SANs requires an understanding of a customer's business needs, importance and priority of data sets, future growth and so on,' Bowden said.
