Lotus has replaced Notes Welcome Page with Portal Builder for Notes Release 5 (R5). The new software works along the same lines as Welcome Page, allowing users and developers to tailor portal applications.
Lotus claims that this latest version of "personalisation" software enables developers to create customised portal applications designed specifically for their end users. Their clients are able to further personalise a specific selection of the portal to include information they choose. Lotus is also promoting the new software for its corporate applications, claiming that it lets companies develop customised portals for either organisational, departmental or personal use. Information on the Lotus Web site promotes the centralised nature of the new software for corporate purposes as the portals can be updated centrally and new versions distributed via an e-mail link.
The new portals include information from a variety of sources and unlike Notes Welcome Page don't require programming skills to set up. Company sources also point out that because the Portal Builder enables developers to include executable programs within their customised portal, Lotus Notes R5 serves as a complete desktop.
The Notes Portal Builder is available to customers with Lotus Notes 5.03 or higher. Lotus Notes R5 is available now for Windows 32-bit platforms (Windows 95,98,2000 and Windows NT 4.0) and Macintosh PowerPC-based systems (Mac OS 7.6.1+) for a suggested volume price of $US116 per user. The Portal Builder template and Best Practices Guide are available free of charge via a Web download. www.lotus.com/portalbuilder
