PC assembler-cum-manufacturer Magnafield claims to have a one-of-a-kind e-commerce site where resellers can get stock information, quotes and order online.
The system allows resellers to provide their customers with quotes directly off the Magnafield site as it includes a reseller's logo and mark-up costs in the quote it gives them, allowing them to print out and give the customer the information immediately.
`Resellers have been looking for an easier way to do it than the traditional fax, wait, return fax, put the information in their database and then find that the customer has already disappeared,' said Alex Woerndle, marketing manager for Magnafield.
Resellers are able to select individual components and configurations from the site, with it offering all of Magnafield's products, including Canon's entire range, Jazz speakers and Microtek scanners as well as its own PCs. According to Woerndle, the most difficult aspect of the design for the developer, Portjile, was ensuring that resellers couldn't order components that were not compatible.
The password-protected site has proven a hit with the assembler's resellers, with Woerndle explaining that in its first month of operation the $50 million a year company did $1 million worth of business through the Web alone and is currently producing 25 per cent of the company's business.
Woerndle also attributes the addition of five new vendors and products to its distribution range in the last four weeks to its e-commerce site. These include Microtek, Jazz Hipster, Panasonic, OKI and Lexmark.
`Every vendor we have approached has shown a lot of excitement and jumped on board. In the next 12 months it [the Web site] will be our major form of business,' predicted Woerndle. He claimed that puts Magnafield six months ahead of the competition, with many other wholesalers so far reluctant to part with the significant investment required to get a site like this up and running.
`I haven't seen any of our competitors pushing this fully online quoting and ordering system.
`It's definitely worth it though, for us as well as the reseller because it saves a lot of time and resources,' explained Woerndle.
Eventually the site will be linked to Magnafield's accounting system, with future plans also including resellers able to link their company systems to Magnafields.
`Resellers are already asking us if they can link the back of their systems to ours, though from a programming point of view that is difficult so might take a while,' said Woerndle.
