Oracle launches Portal Partner initiative

Oracle has launched a Portal Partner Initiative geared to bring service providers and software vendors together to help corporations build enterprise portal sites to manage users, Web-based data and applications.

Partners who join the initiative will offer syndicated content, applications and integration services for corporate portals built on the Oracle Enterprise Portal framework. Oracle will provide technology, training and support to partners.

Partners fall into categories for content providers, independent software vendors and system integrators, with Oracle already signing on 10 partners to get the initiative rolling, the company said in a written statement yesterday.

Oracle uses an open portal framework that relies on portlets and Web-based components that can be used over again, giving employees, customers and business partners access to data and applications. Portlets are software components in which companies house reusable information or applications that can be used to quickly assemble electronic business portals.

According to Oracle, any application, business report, Web page, XML-based news feed or other source of information can be turned into a portlet and then integrated into and managed through the Oracle Enterpise Portal framework. The technology is designed to help corporations manage Web-based data just as they manage, for example, directories and e-mail systems.

Among the Oracle partners announced were:, Verity, Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and Ernst & Young LLP.
