Telxon joins handheld throng

The handheld market is beginning to attract quite a crowd with wireless and mobile specialist Telxon offering up its PTC-960M handheld PC to the mobile data collection market.

Working off a blueprint supplied to it by customers from the package delivery, transportation, warehousing industries as well as mobile data entry workers in general, Telxon has added what is hoped to be a barrage of relevant features.

"We asked customers and industry associations what issues they were facing and what we could do with our product. We came back with a modular design that can integrate with both a local area radio and a wide area radio and the ability to support Windows CE," explained Brian Lang, managing director of Telxon.

Customers also demanded more flexible keyboard and screen options so Telxon have included various alphanumeric, numeric and touchscreen data entry points and a high-resolution LCD display.

Outlining Telxon's sales strategy, Lang revealed plans to establish a Telxon Solution Partner Program where resellers would be responsible for certain vertical markets.

"We have a mixture of direct and indirect sales. Our sales teams are aligned with particular vertical markets and deal with large sales. We are looking at getting resellers to chase down the medium and smaller business," Lang said.

Lang explained that Telxon is looking for resellers who "can add value to our product".

He added that resellers who have expertise in particular vertical markets and can "add their technology to our technology" will be attractive to the vendor.
