EMC introduces products to replicate data

EMC on Monday unveiled a variety of products that fit into its information lifecycle management strategy.

The EMC Open Replicator for Symmetrix, Symmetrix Remote Data Facility/Star (SRDF/Star) and the Celerra FileMover software are intended to help users migrate and replicate data on their networks.

Open Replicator for Symmetrix lets customers replicate data from Symmetrix DMX storage arrays to arrays from Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM or EMC over long distances. A live restore capability lets customers retrieve data before all data is copied back to a destination, to shorten recovery time. The live restore feature can also be used for online data migrations in which an application can start before all data has been migrated to it.

Open Replicator for Symmetrix will be available in the first quarter of 2005 for IBM Enterprise Storage Server; EMC Clariion; HP StorageWorks XP256, XP512, XP1024 and Enterprise Virtual Array; and Hitachi Lightning storage arrays. Support for mid-range IBM DS family and HP StorageWorks Enterprise Modular Arrays will be available in the second quarter of next year.

SRDF/Star enables customers to replicate data among three data centers. Previously EMC supported replication between two data centers, but found that many financial institutions have more than one remote data center. SRDF/Star copies data to two other data centers, which continue to protect the organization if the primary data center is not available. SRDF/Star will be available in the first quarter of 2005. The product requires Symmetrix DMX arrays on each end of the connection.

EMC also announced enhancements to its e-mail and database archiving products. EmailXtender now supports Microsoft Exchange 2003; DatabaseXtender now supports Sybase, PeopleSoft and Oracle. The enhancements will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

Further, EMC unveiled Celerra FileMover software for its network-attached storage. FileMover lets users migrate files to lower-cost storage based on rules the storage administrator sets. It is integrated with Arkivio's and Enigma Data Systems' policy engines.
