In its quest for global dominance, MYOB has bought one of its contracted software developers and will peddle its product overseas, says local general manager Rob Evers.
MYOB originally contracted software developer Blue Tongue Technologies to develop point-of-sale (POS) retail software product Digi~Till. MYOB distributed the product nationally, and used the Digi~Till product name, until the accounting software company bought Blue Tongue last year, Evers said.
"We were looking to secure our position in the global POS market," he said, explaining that MYOB had not been satisfied with Blue Tongue's lack of international presence.
MYOB relaunched Digi~Till today, with "added features", as MYOB RetailManager.
Evers stressed that RetailManager, which retails for $995, was not recommended as an add-on to existing retail POS technology products. "It's a single entity," he said, although he emphasised that RetailManager would be compatible with other MYOB products.
Evers said one added feature found in the software product was a POS customer relationship management (CRM) application which he said allowed retailers to store valuable customer information learned at the time of sale. MYOB believes this function, which allows retailers to keep records of customer interests, will enhance customer loyalty.
MYOB recommends retailers use RetailManager in conjunction with other POS peripherals, such as barcode scanners and electronic cash drawers.
The GST industry
Although he would not speculate on MYOB's expected revenues as a result of the GST, Evers said he did not expect business would "slow down" after details of the new tax system were announced on June 31.
He said that in New Zealand companies had continued to buy and install GST-compliant software for up to two years after the tax was introduced there. "People were determined to do everything manually," he said.
