What it is: An online front for Italian restaurant bel mondo. The site presents patrons with bel mondo's wine list, its menu, upcoming events at the restaurant and a history of proprietors, the Manfedi family, and the restaurant itself.
Aims: bel mondo wanted to transfer the atmosphere of its restaurant to its Web site in order to better service its existing customers, who often asked to be faxed the 30-page wine list, and to attract new customers. The site also aims to take advantage of upcoming events such as the Olympics and is designed to attract and inform international guests.
Who developed it: The site was developed by a partnership between Web developer Presence Online and designer Emery Vincent Design (EMV). EMV concentrated on transferring bel mondo's strong brand credibility online and created the look and feel of the site.
Presence were responsible for the more technical aspects of the site and ensured that the creative design EMV devised was practical online. This meant Presence determined the navigational structure of the site.
Development time: Overall the site took a couple of months to design and build. Presence and EMV first went through a process of determining what it was bel mondo wanted to achieve through the site. They then spent two weeks devising an architectural expression of what the site would be like. Design templates and graphical renderings of what the site would look like, as well as producing the actual pages, were made in about a week. The content then had to be incorporated into the design, which took about a month.
Technology used: Microsoft Active Server Pages defined the look, feel and navigational capabilities of the site. bel mondo staff can maintain and upgrade the site using most formats such as Excel or Word and then FrontPage translates it consistently onto the Web.
Cost: Presence puts the cost of building a Web site for a small-to-medium business from $20,000 upwards. Large corporations can spend over $250,000 building a site.
Special features: The site was designed specifically for easy and cost-effective maintenance. Once the site was built, bel mondo was self-sufficient in upgrading its content after a half-day training session with Presence.http://www.belmondo.com.au
