Com Tech and ISS offer security blanket

Net security company Internet Security Systems (ISS) is expecting to generate over 50 per cent of its future revenues from a partnership with ComTech for the supply of managed security services.

In what ISS officials claim is an Australian first, Com Tech and ISS have partnered to provide security services to businesses wishing to outsource the majority of their Internet security.

The agreement stems from a five-year partnership that ISS had with US-company Netrix for similar services, said Steve Laskowski, ISS Australia and New Zealand managing director. Netrix was acquired last year by ISS.

Under the deal, Com Tech and ISS will provide customers with 24 x 7 remote security management including firewall protection, intrusion detection, virus protection, virtual private network monitoring and content analysis.

Laskowski said the partnership will allow security administrators and managers to concentrate on security policy making rather than everyday operations and administration tasks. "We're enabling companies to use resources in a more strategic role."

According to Laskowski, ISS and Com Tech are examining the possibility of forming deals with telecommunications providers who will outsource their security services to the joint venture. "The telcos will sell security to their respective customers and we will manage the back end."

Once established in Australia, ISS plans to take the operation offshore, firstly to Southeast Asia, South Africa and parts of Europe through a partnership with Dimension Data, Laskowski said.

Targeted at small-to-medium businesses and government agencies, the base fee for the service starts at $455 per month, for a minimum two-year contract with a monthly subscription fee.

Laskowski doe not believe the high fees will deter customers. He said there is a huge demand for security services and ISS and ComTech "will be able to do a better job" than in-house teams.

Meanwhile, Com Tech announced last week a partnership with electronic procurement company Ariba to become the company's business-to-business ASP provider.
