Citrix Quantifies ROI of Access Infrastructure

- Rapid Application Deployment, High Application Availability and Longer Hardware Lifecycles Identified as Key Areas for Customer Savings -

Sydney, — 16 October 2003 — At Citrix iForum 2003 (, Citrix Systems, Inc. announced the results of a return on investment (ROI) study based on Gartner's ROI Methodology, which identified the top customer benefits and associated cost savings of Citrix® MetaFrame® Presentation Server in customer environments. Through in-depth interviews with 23 Citrix customers, the study identified the top business performance benefits of deploying Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server as well as the benefits yielding the greatest financial impact on customer organisations – in one scenario up to 100 percent cost savings.

“Through in-depth interviews with customers, we found that organisations have realised measurable financial gains as a result of implementing Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server,” said David Manks, senior director of product marketing for Citrix. “By determining a rational, credible view of ROI for Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server based on Gartner’s ROI Methodology, we will be able to communicate ROI credibly to prospective customers.”

For the study, interviews were conducted with 23 Citrix customers from North America, EMEA, AsiaPac and Latin America across eleven vertical markets – telecommunications, healthcare, financial services, retail, government, education, energy, pharmaceuticals, media, high tech and transportation. All organisations interviewed realised significant benefits through implementing MetaFrame Presentation Server. The following were identified as having the greatest financial impact on their organisations:

- Rapid and easy deployment of applications to client devices. By measuring IT man hours for testing and deployment, the study found that many organisations that deployed applications via Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server significantly reduced their annual efforts to provision applications to individual client devices, thus saving the time and cost of IT staff to travel and upgrade individual computers. In a manual testing environment, desktop administrators would previously spend between 20 minutes to an hour per PC, and that time can be 100 percent eliminated by using MetaFrame Presentation Server.

- Rapid and easy deployment to client devices for Web-based applications with client-side applets, plug-ins or controls. By measuring IT man hours, the study found that Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server enables companies to lower desktop browser deployment and maintenance costs through centralised management of all client application components, including browser versions. Moreover, MetaFrame Presentation Server reduces configuration issues since IT administrators can easily manage different application versions from a central server.

- High availability of applications. Due to improved stability, applications deployed centrally via Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server have a higher availability versus applications deployed locally on individual client devices. With Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server, event with low-bandwidth connections, particularly mobile and remote office workers, users experience even more pronounced performance enhancements and a consistent level of performance.

- Effective with heterogeneous operating systems and browser versions. The increasing complexity of IT systems is driven by the wide variety of custom and off-the-shelf information systems that have been deployed in enterprise organisations over time. Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server simplifies the deployment, monitoring, measurement and management of these information resources in heterogeneous computing environments. Therefore, applications no longer depend on PC processing capabilities or compatibility. As a result, organisations can eliminate the cost of buying PCs for non-Windows users, eliminate the cost of emulation software for Windows users to access UNIX® applications and extend the lifespan of operating systems, resulting in reduced labor costs for desktop technicians to perform upgrades.

- Extends the hardware refresh lifecycle and maximises existing infrastructure investments. Since applications deployed via Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server reside on the server, this approach effectively separates new software implementations from the decision to replace client hardware. A company’s client hardware that is only used within the Citrix environment can gain an additional one to two years of useful life, thus reducing these hardware costs by 25 percent per year. In addition, older PCs and client devices can be replaced with lower-cost thin client devices, saving additional hardware costs.

- No need to rewrite custom applications for Web or wireless access. With Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server, workforces can access full-featured business applications over any network without application rewrites or other customisation. This extends the lifecycle of custom-built enterprise applications that would otherwise need to be Web-enabled for remote and wireless access.

- Centralises and simplifies application administration. Using Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server can improve the productivity of PC technicians and help desk administrators by centralising application deployment and management. Fewer help desk calls due to increased stability of applications and faster problem resolution due to easier diagnosis can reduce costs by about 15 percent.

The foundation of the Citrix MetaFrame Access Suite – the most comprehensive access infrastructure solution for on-demand access to enterprise applications and information from anywhere, anytime, using any device, over any connection – Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server is the world’s most widely deployed presentation server for centrally managing heterogeneous applications and delivering their functionality as a service to workers, wherever they may be. MetaFrame Presentation Server is certified to run on Windows 2000 and 2003 Servers, and supports virtually any custom or commercially packaged Windows applications. MetaFrame Presentation Server provides an exceptional foundation to build highly scalable, flexible, secure, manageable access solutions that reduce computing costs and increase the utility of any information system.

An interactive sales tool and case studies based on the study are currently being developed by Citrix, and will be generally available in the beginning of 2004.
