At least six customers have already signed up to use CSC's local dot-com research and development centre, which is due to open in May.
Located in Canberra, the centre is one of three global dot-com competency centres that CSC is establishing around the world. Other centres are located in the US and UK.
Russell Hatton, CSC's manager of net markets said the centres were research and development environments that would "help companies visualise, build prototypes and be educated about what it takes to go online and become an online business".
Established as part of CSC's global alliance with Sun Microsystems under the iForce initiative (see below), the centre will showcase local and global ebusiness technology from a variety of companies, including CSC and Sun.
Additionally, the centre will demonstrate future technologies from CSC and provide a proof-of-concept environment where CSC partners and customers can build and test prototype technologies before implementing them, Hatton said.
According to Hatton, whilst much of the hardware for the Canberra centre is provided by Sun and the centre will play a key role in the iForce initiative, CSC's agreement with Sun is not exclusive and the centre will be used for initiatives unrelated to iForce.
CSC will use the centre to demonstrate technologies including PKI security, WAP (wireless application protocol) solutions, XML, Java and Palm Pilots, Hatton said.
Large outsourcing customers, corporates, SME customers and SME partners from Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia are expected to benefit from the centre, Hatton said.
According to Hatton, CSC's ebusiness activities currently generate around 5 per cent of CSC's local revenue. Ebusiness revenues are expected to make up 30-50 per cent of total revenues over the next couple of years, Hatton said.
CSC's local revenues are currently close to $1 billion with the majority generated from outsourcing deals.iForce is a Sun-led initiative, in which Sun is forming a global community of partners to help customers development and implement ebusiness solutions. Sun is establishing global centres in the US, Tokyo and Paris.
