E-commerce specialist Balanced IT Services (BITS) has taken the honours in Australia Post's annual small business awards, securing a place in the 10 finalists and recognised as the top IT small business for NSW.
Open to all NSW businesses with less than 100 employees, there were 100 entrants from industries across the board. "We were one of 10 finalists and the only IT company to reach the finalist category," said John Perkins, managing director of BITS.
In attaining this status, BITS had to prove its dedication to customer satisfaction. "Customer service was the deciding factor but company management and growth were also taken into account," Perkins said.
Perkins explained that BITS considers its customers partners and for this reason attempts to keep close contact with them. "We have weekly technical updates, monthly meetings and seminars," said Perkins, explaining BITS' long-standing relationships with many of its clients.
"Most of the customers we do e-commerce work with now we used to supply network integration to. Eighteen months ago we would have built them a Web site. Twelve months ago we would have built them an intranet. Six months ago we would have built them an extranet and now we are designing them an e-commerce system capable of transactions."
In order to stand out in the substantial crowd at the Australia Post awards, BITS had to show it was innovative and unique. "We are heavily involved in Internet commerce and we're a Microsoft e-commerce partner and a Hewlett-Packard Internet partner, neither of which there are many," boasted Perkins.
