IP videoconferencing service provider Video-com is to launch its first level of service within eight weeks. The service, a joint venture, was announced by PowerASP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Powerlan and Gullewa. Software development and hosting will be provided by Powerlan as a key offering on its PowerASP portal. Powerlan will own 45 per cent of Videcom. Videcom is to target ISPs, ASPs, search engines and major Web sites.

LAN Systems has been appointed the exclusive distributor of Identicator hardware and software in Australia and New Zealand. Nick Verykios, chief marketing officer at LAN Systems, believes biometrics will soon move beyond computers, to provide security access to cars, bank accounts and trading over the Internet. He said the beauty of using a physical feature like a fingerprint as a password, was its unique nature. "There's only a one in two billion chance of two people having the same fingerprint," Verykios added.

Networking vendor D-Link has launched its DES-3624 series stackable 10/100Mbps switches with a Gigabit option, which are designed for departmental networks. The DES-3624IF is the master switch in the series and the DES-3624 is the minor switch. Both can be stacked-up to increase port density and it is also possible to fine tune performance and set-up security. Scalable expansion of up to four switches stacked together can allow the entire stack to perform as a single entity. Units to reach maximum 94 10/100Mbps ports per stack, allow for more powerful has announced its FOM-485 asynchronous RS-485 miniature fibre optic modem. It can be used for multipoint applications where there is a need to connect a main controller to several remote terminal units (RTUs). RAD's FOM-485 supports full duplex transmission over 4-wire, and half duplex over 2-wire cables. It allows connection of up to 32 RTU's to a single host, at data rates up to 115.2Kbps and can transmit data distances up to 16km over fibre. The FOM-485 is available from
