Seagate Technology claims the new Cheetah X15 is the first drive to operate at 15,000 revolutions per minute (rpm), while delivering 3.9ms average seek time, which it says is the fastest in the world.

According to senior vice

president David Wickersham, product line management at Seagate, the Cheetah X15 changes the notion that disk drives are valued according to cost per megabyte.

"The demands of the data-intensive applications such as e-commerce and data warehousing have changed market requirements from capacity to speed per transaction," Wickersham said. "The true value of server class storage must be measured in transactions per second or IOPS per second."

Seagate claims that the cheetah X15's transaction performance can improve storage response time by up to 50 per cent.

The company says that samples of the Cheetah X15 18GB drive will be available for major OEMs in early second quarter, volume production in third quarter and an expected single unit retail price of "less than $US1000".www.seagate.com3Com has announced a combination V.90 and 10/100 LAN card for notebooks.
