New online deal fits prescription

Value-adding e-seller Volante Online is determined to prove the worth of providing its technology solutions over the Net to SME mar- ket niches with the development and success of a solution for GPs.

The lucrative health industry is one of the first cherries picked for the Volante group's dedicated online reseller business unit, an initiative it launched late last year.

Volante Online is now selling a packaged solution to general practit-ioners over the Net in combination with Compaq and Health On Net, a South Australian Internet service run by General Practice Information Management Company (GPIMC).

Volante Online's general manager, Paul Cherny, said the simplicity of purchasing on its Web site appeals to GPs and close to 100 units had been sold during December and January. It is the type of niche that is ideally suited to this sort of online procurement.

`It is the first of many similar packages we expect to be selling over the Net,' Cherny said. `We are talking to a number of business partners and vendors about them being able to use our call centre facility, the infrastructure Volante has and our Web site to get a product or a message across. It is a big opportunity for us.'

Over 750 GPs are registered with GPMIC's site and they will be able to purchase an entry-level Compaq PC loaded with the popular clinical package Medical Director at a volume discount as a result of the packaging by Volante Online. Technical service agreements are also included in the package.

Cherny said that an opportunity had been espied in the medical market as a result of the fact that, by Government decree, all GPs' surgeries had to be computerised by July 1. They will also be required to `have the ability to receive electronically pathology and radiology results', according to Cherny.

Volante Online was set up to specifically target SME customers which it described as being in the `50 to 500 customer' range, according to Cherny. He said that by making available its call centre and `intuitive Internet-based procurement solution' to customers gives it a significant differentiator in a crowded reseller marketplace.

`The Health On Net situation is a classic fit for us to work together to target general practitioners who are, after all, also small businesses,' Cherny said.

The online reseller concept has been a successful one for Volante, said Cherny, who added that January's Web site sales were double that of December.

`Even over a quiet period, we have been pleased with the growth,' he said, although he is not expecting a huge number of other resellers to imitate the business model.

`Our direct relationships with many of the key vendors [through Volante] are a distinct advantage that we can bring to the market,' Cherny added.
