Information Potential ~ peer to peer
Making the most of their potential
John Turner, Information Potential's managing director, talks with Vivienne FisherARN: How was your company started?
Turner: The company was started by Stephen Foley writing software for his father's legal business. It developed from there as we moved into networking, acquiring more people and establishing a good name for ourselves. We have spread from doing legal work into state government and telecomms.
In 1993 we won the Australian Telecommunications and Computing Gold Award for a remote solution we developed for Telstra MobileNet.
What products and services do you offer?
We're networking people and Compaq is our most valued business partner. We'll install, develop and support any networking solution - LAN, WAN, and we're also doing communication point solutions. We're a bit selective and if we cannot save or make our customers money we will walk away, because our customers' views are number one. The products and services that we supply are ones that we've focused on with our partners for the past 12 years.
What are your company's key business strengths?
Our staff is our greatest asset. We're small, so we've got a great ability to move quickly. Everybody in the com-pany is aware of our sales and customer focus and we're also 100 per cent Australian owned and have a central business district focus. Our longevity and good name is something which has developed from referrals.
What areas of technology are you keeping a close watch on?
One area we're looking at is maximising returns on communications dollars, and we've got some new partnerships which will enable us to do that. We're well down the track with solutions involving Citrix thin client and handheld CE devices. Getting the best return on communications dollars involves bandwidth and optimising the efficiency down that pipe. Everybody's got these LANs and WANs, so we've got some products which will allow them to make the most of returns down those. We haven't got all the answers because we're small, so we try and focus on our area of expertise. We were Australia's first gold Citrix partner and there is much more work to be done there at the moment.
How would you describe your company's management approach?
Hopefully our management approach is in line with what our customers want. From time to time we'll embrace a new product even if it is still just being talked about.
What does the future hold?
The future looks bright, working with our staff and partners on the many opportunities we see. We'll continue to focus on the 50 to 500 workstation market and we're expecting growth both in revenue and in the services area.
