Smart Storage has appointed Lan 1 to distribute its CD and DVD network storage solutions.
Glenn Jones, Lan 1's marketing manager, said the distribution deal means his company can now offer storage management software as well as the storage unit itself.
"We currently distribute a product for Meridian Data, but with Quantum taking over Meridian it is dropping the product line. We looked around to find a replacement and came across the Smart Storage product. The advantage is that it's a complete solution. We previously lacked the management software and this product offers both."
The software is supported by both NT and Unix platforms.
Jones said the Smart Storage product would be "significant" for Lan 1, particularly with the company's government clients.
"The market's going to grow and DVD will eclipse CD. CD-ROM took eight years to reach critical mass; it's predicted DVD will only take two. It's good for an archiving environment because you can store 3.9MB on a single disk. We're expecting a significant amount of business, particularly in government. It can be used in government, education, legal, library and medical imaging."
