Needing a replacement for lucrative education sales previously handled by the now-defunct Dataflow, utilities software vendor, Symantec has appointed existing retail and corporate distributors Tech Pacific and Express Data to fill the hole.
According to Symantec's local general manager, John Donovan, educational users were offered special pricing on the vendor's products. While Tech Pac and ED had already been allowed access to the distribution of licensing agreements to education-based resellers but Dataflow had exclusive rights on the packaged products for this market.
"It's pretty large market," Donovan said of campus sales to all the students and teachers that were eligible to purchase at the reduced prices. "Both [distributors] were saying that they would like to get a hold of the packaged products and that they could grow the market.
"The pressure is now on for them to deliver, but I am sure hey will do a sterling job," he added.
Donovan said the two existing distributors were the obvious choices for its educational range following the demise of Dataflow as the already have the product knowledge and collectively have access to a huge reseller base. He also claimed that it was "too early to say" whether Symantec had suffered a decline in educational sales in the last few months as Dataflow ground to a halt.
