Acer moves into networking

PC vendor Acer Computer Australia has launched itself into the networking market in an effort to provide a total hardware solution for its channel partners.

As of this month, Acer is distributing a networking product range which includes routers, managed master switches, hubs and modems to create a stable and flexible networking environment and to cover the needs of all the key sectors.

John Bays, Acer Australia network product marketing manager, says the launch of the range is more about offering a total hardware solution than a shift in focus from PC to networking. "This is not about capturing more of the market, although this may be a result. It is about making it easier for our traditional channel partners to provide a total Acer solution," he says.

"It is certainly Acer's thinking that resellers are looking for a good quality total solution," says Bays.

"They are finding that the complexities of having multiple vendors is becoming unmanageable, especially when it comes to on-site maintenance contracts. When you have parts from 15 different vendors it is hard enough to track service, but then you get cases where the distributor is an agent for a vendor. In two years time when the reseller comes back to them they have changed brands and it becomes virtually impossible to get second- and third-level support."Acer plans to reduce this process to three basic groups. "The money is in service and support," says Bays. "If the reseller has to use this margin chasing up 15 different vendors they are sustaining a lot of waste in time and money."The product range is aimed specifically at the SME and SOHO markets which, according to Bay, fits well with Acer's PC and notebook products, but over time the company will move into the corporate market.
