Hitachi to roll out SMB storage system

Hitachi Data Systems is expected to announce Wednesday a storage area network for small and mid-size businesses implementing their first networked storage.

The Hitachi Thunder 9520V is a modular workgroup storage system which can be used to consolidate the storage from multiple Microsoft Corp. Windows servers. It also can be used for archiving data in tiered storage environments, according to Hitachi.

The 9520V has a maximum capacity of 13 terabytes and supports as many as 512 connections to host computers. It contains Serial ATA disk drives and Hitachi's Hi-Track call-home remote service offering.

The 9520V ships with Hitachi's ShadowImage In-System Replication for business continuity and disaster recovery. It supports Windows, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Linux and NetWare host computers, among others.

The storage system is rack-mounted and ships with an eight-port Fibre Channel switch from Brocade Communications Systems or McData, and Emulex host bus adapters.

The Thunder 9520V will be sold by Hitachi partners.

The system ranges in price from US$22,000 to US$24,000.
