New visual partnerships

Visual media manufacturers SGI and Intergraph have joined forces and amalgamated product lines.

The new deal, brokered in the US, will see SGI-branded Intergraph video products sold through joint resellers.

Paul Rushton, SGI marketing manager for Australian and New Zealand, said Intergraph had been in the marketplace for this type of partnership for some time.

"Essentially, Intergraph has good video capabilities in its product line, that are not in the current SGI product line. We found that the product lines were basically complementary," Rushton said.

"Australian resellers will not see much of a change as we shared a lot of channel partners."Rushton said the move would also see SGI take a significant stake in Intergraph R&D.

Under the agreement, SGI will acquire - complete with intellectual property - Intergraph's Zx10 high-performance NT workstation and server family. SGI will incorporate these systems into its product line and market them under the SGI brand alongside its existing Silicon Graphics 230, 330 and 550 NT visual workstations, and Intergraph will act as a reseller of SGI products and services.

In a joint statement, Dr Lee Finniear, managing director of Intergraph, and Bill Trestrail, managing director of Silicon Graphics , confirmed that they were working together to ensure that the move did not cause too much disruption to the reseller channel or end users.
