GMT renews channel push

Despite a Y2K-bug-related interruption, UK-based software developer Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) has managed to get back on track with the development of its Make it SOE product, chalking up $2.5 million in sales so far this year. At the same time, the company has continued to aggressively recruit resellers in NSW and VIC to bolster its local presence.

GMT started developing its PC network product, designed to give administrators greater control over desktop applications, before the Y2K bug reared its head in 1999. Seeing an opportunity, GMT used its Make it SOE technology to develop its Check 2000 tool.

Having ceased its Australian distribution agreement with the distribution company of the same name GMT Pty Ltd earlier this year (as reported in ARN, March 8), the software developer is back on the road with Make it SOE and looking towards Australia as its next big market.

Backed by a $250,000 investment in the channel, GMT is currently in the process of hiring a channel manager and Michael Squires, GMT's Australian managing director, is looking for a dozen resellers with networking skills around the country.

The company has already signed Perth-based reseller Millenium Group, and a number of retailers for its consumer product, The J Box, but is still actively looking for enterprise-level resellers to start selling the Make it SOE offering.

Make it SOE sits on the network creating a digital profile for each PC, and then monitors the PC's performance against this profile. Any deviation from the assigned profile, which is a set of rules describing the desired hardware, operating system, software and data configuration for that PC, alerts the network manager.

In effect it limits what a user, or user group can access on their PCs - such as the Internet or certain file types. According to Squires, the applications for Make it SOE enable IS managers to "close the lid" and control network clutter at the desktop level.

"It allows IT managers to not have to fight fires," he said. "They're not paid to fight fires."

To support its growing reseller base, GMT is also planning to go live with a revamped, services-driven Web site.

Make it SOE will be sold on a sliding-scale licence basis, starting at $125 per licence, and Squires claims resellers stand to make around 40 per cent on margins.

Squires is also trying to negotiate a bundling agreement with two server manufacturers. GMT is currently negotiating a 700-seat deployment locally, but Squires was tight-lipped when it came to which parties were involved.
